Gardening, Jake is Five

Flare really lives up to her name. She is beautiful!

Might be hard to tell but she's getting bigger. She and Spike have been shedding almost constantly. They shed a leg one week, the tail the next, or the head. They continue to be alert and friendly, walking right up to the glass. Flare will tap her nose on the glass to come out!

Jacob turned 5! The cake is a hilarious disaster that was chocolate so it didn't matter. I made the head and front fins then realized I didn't want to bake a whole new batch of cake to make a long enough body. Thus the wimpy/strange back half. It was covered in sprinkles so there were no complaints :)

Jake took a picture of our dragon dens. They are right at eye level for the kids and even Katy crawls up then pulls herself up to peek at them. Once Jim had the door open to Spike's cage while getting food ready. Katy put her hand in and "petted" Spike right on the nose. He just sat there looking at her and she was thrilled until daddy put an end to their bonding. Which was good since Katy is teething and everything within her reach ends up in her mouth.

First ever REAL garden plans for our family. Wohoo!

A truck delivered 40 bales of pine straw and lots of healthy garden dirt.

That doesn't look like a lot of dirt but it was a LOT to move through the squishy backyard! It was raining all morning as we prepped and began working but luckily stopped but mid afternoon.

We planted everything already. It's a bit early but we have a great 10 day forecast and plenty of pine straw to cover everything if we get a freeze. And lots more seeds to replant. If all goes well we should harvest strawberries, corn, slicer tomatoes, broccoli, grape tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, mustard greens (for bearded dragons), red bell peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, yellow squash... I think that's it. We are going to drape the whole thing with netting and see how that keeps pests and children out.

The small but mighty twig. At least it hasn't broken off. No buds or foliage showing but we have high hopes considering the "trunk" looks healthy.

We have come a long way since moving in 11 months ago. Remember this?

It's amazing to see the difference!! The kids helped me put pine straw all over the back yard. We pine mulched the four blueberry bushes, two apple trees, and blackberry and grape vines.

Remember this?

All those vines and crazy thorny bushes?

We don't have the beautiful leaves of summer here yet, but I love how playable this space is now!

Jacob took another house picture, wanting to show the 'kid art' wall. The school aged kids bring home at least 20 pages of work/art a week. It is amazing to me! I let them pick one to hang up so we don't end up hoarding several forests of schoolwork :)

For almost a year Jacob has begged me to make Shark Attack cupcakes. For his birthday I finally made them and we had the cousins over for a dance party and cupcakes in celebration of his birthday.

Dallin really liked the shark :) The kids loved singing along to favorites like Let It Go and danced to songs like Everything is Awesome while we had a disco ball light going. It was... well, awesome.
